The smoking ban in private vehicles is in place to protect passengers from passive smokers and to improve road traffic safety, e.g. by preventing the driver from being distracted by the act of smoking. Private vehicles are used by individuals for private transportation; smoking bans on private vehicles are less frequent than prohibitions extended to public transport or vehicles used during work, such as trucks or police cars.

Traffic security
The act of finding, grabbing, and then lighting a cigarette can greatly distract the driver. A burned cigarette or marijuana that falls into the driver's lap can cause a panic-like reaction. Cigarettes thrown out of the window pose a serious fire threat. Some serious traffic accidents in Germany are known to be caused by a lit cigarette. Some German courts comment on carelessness of smoking while driving. Smoking can be compared by using a mobile phone while driving, which is also prohibited in some jurisdictions.

Protection from passive smokers
More recently, the dangers of passive smokers have seen more attention, and smoking in cars (whether or not they are moving) is prohibited in some jurisdictions as an act against passive smokers. Cigarette smoke (SHS) is also called environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). It is a mixture of 2 forms of smoke that comes from burning tobacco. Mainstream smoke Smoke exhaled by a smoker. Smoke sidestream Smoke from the tip of a cigarette, pipe, or burning cigar, or burning tobacco in a hookah. This type of smoke has a higher concentration of cancer-causing agents (carcinogens) and is more toxic than the main cigarette smoke. It also has particles smaller than the main smoke. These smaller particles make their way to the lungs and body cells easier. When non-smokers are exposed to SHS, it is referred to as accidental smoke or passive smoking. Non-smokers who breathe in SHS take nicotine and toxic chemicals just like smokers. The more SHS you inhale, the higher the levels of these harmful chemicals in your body. Some laws stipulate that the ban applies only if passengers are under a certain age. A study study showed that after smoking a cigarette in the car, the time it took for the concentration of the particles to be inhaled back to its original value, depending on the case of car movement, window position and ventilation settings, varied between 10 and 60 minutes.
Wildfires
Cigarettes or cigarette droppings removed from car windows that move through the vegetation area (especially during summer) is one of the causes of forest fires or forest fires. A statistics of the southern French department of fire attributes 16% of local bushfires for cigarette waste disposed of moving vehicles (and 13.8% for cigarette waste from pedestrians).
