Histori

This area was originally home to Native American Pawtucket. Scottish immigrants began to settle in the area in 1719. The area was known as "Nutfield" and included what is now the neighboring town of Derry and Londonderry. In 1721 some of the original settlers petitioned to form separate independent communities. Governor Benning Wentworth granted this request in 1742. One published theory states that the name of the community refers to Windham, Ireland, which recalls back to the homeland of the petitioners. However, it has become a postulated alternative that the city was named after Sir Charles Wyndham, Earl of Egremont, a Member of Parliament from 1734 to 1750, Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Southern Department from 1761 to 1763, and a good friend of Wentworth Governor.. The town of Windham was originally a Londonderry parish. Windham is the second city appointed by Governor Benning Wentworth after the establishment of the New Hampshire-Massachusetts border. Windham is the birthplace of Samuel Dinsmoor, New Hampshire Governor from 1831 to 1834. The first census ever conducted at Windham totaled 663 inhabitants in 1790.

Windham's historical landmarks include Searles School, Searles Castle, downtown, and Armstrong Memorial Building. Searles Castle is one of Windham's most prominent landmarks. Edward F. Searles, an interior decorator and antique collector, built the castle. The architect, Henry Vaughn, modeled the architecture of the castle after the Stanton Harcourt Manor style in Oxfordshire, England. The building was completed in 1915 at a cost of over $ 1,250,000. The castle contains over 20 rooms and is available to the public for rent for events and events. In July 1909, Mr. Searles established a plaque honoring the memorial of governor Samuel Dinsmoor "a few stems" from his birthplace on Jenny Hill, which stands today as a designated historic landmark.
