This song has its roots in blues music and initially associated with a marijuana smoker who is reminiscent of losing financial opportunities. As rewritten, she takes the perspective of a female partner, who misled her husband for his irresponsible ways:

Why do not you do the right thing, like other men do? Get out of here and give me money too.

I said, 'Oh, I like it.' He said, 'Do you want me to set it up?' I said, 'I like that,' and he did it. "

"Why Do not You Do It Properly?" not the greatest hit of Goodman and Lee. However, it reached number four on the Billboard chart and defines Lee's rich and rich vocal style early in his career. Lee married guitarist Dave Barbour and left Goodman in 1943. He intends to retire from the music industry and focus on housekeeping, but he continues to accept an offer to return to the music scene, largely due in part to the success of "Why Are not You True?" singing again, and collaborating with Goodman throughout his career.
