" Hot Rod Lincoln " is a song by American singer-songwriter Charlie Ryan, first released in 1955. The song was written as an answer song for Arkie Shibley's 1951 hit "Hot Rod Race" depicting race in San Pedro, Los Angeles between two hot-rod cars, Ford and Mercury, which remained neck-and-neck until both were defeated by "a child in Model A who went upstairs". "Hot Rod Lincoln" is sung from the perspective of this third driver, whose own hot rod is the Ford Model A body with a Lincoln-Zephyr V12 engine, a gear, a four-barrel carburetor, a 4:11 gear ratio, and a safety tube..
The original rockabilly Ryan version of the song was released in 1955 through Souvenir Records under the names of artist Charley Ryan and Livingston Bros. The second version was released in 1959 through Four Star Records, credited to Charlie Ryan and the Timberline Riders. Ryan is based on a description of an eponymous car on its own hot rod, built from a 1948 twelve-cylinder 1948 Lincoln chassis that is shortened by two feet, with a Ford Model 1930 body mounted on it. Ryan rode his hot rod with a Cadillac sedan driven by a friend in Lewiston, Idaho, on a Spiral Highway (former Route 95 in Idaho) to the summit of Lewiston Hill; he incorporated elements of this race in his lyrics to "Hot Rod Lincoln", but changed the setting to Grapevine Hill (long class, almost straight to Grapevine Canyon to Tejon Pass, near the town of Gorman, California) to fit it in the narrative of "Hot Rod Race ".
The cover version of "Hot Rod Lincoln" was recorded by country musician Johnny Bond and released in 1960 through Republic Records, with Bond lyrics transforming the hot rod machine from V12 to V8. Bonds released a sequel in the same year called "X-15", set in 1997, about an air race on an X-15 aircraft.
