Reaching Everyone By Revealing Lies (REBEL) is an Anti-Tobacco program for teenagers in New Jersey. REBEL started back in 2000 at Kick Ash Weekend. Originally funded under the Main Settlement Agreement as well as tobacco product taxes. There are three REBEL divisions: REBEL2 for high school students, REBEL for high school students, and REBEL U/ROCS for students. The REBEL slogan is "My mind, my body, my choice."

In April 2007, REBEL New Jersey has branches in all 21 counties and in 76 New Jersey high schools. Each district and school has a Youth Coordinator (and school advisor within the school group) who assist in using resources to assist group plans and events. At their meeting, they discuss ideas and make plans to help fight Big Tobacco.

In 2011, REBEL funding was drying up and REBEL ceased operations.

Events

Each REBEL area and a school chapter are required to have at least 5 events.

Great English Great American Smokeout

Each school chapter is required to perform for the Great American Smokeout. Every year on the third Thursday in November, the American Cancer Society sponsors this event to encourage people to quit smoking. Each school chapter organizes events at their school to encourage students and staff to quit smoking.

World No Tobacco Day

31 May every year is World No Tobacco Day. An event created by the World Health Organization. Today encourages people to quit smoking today, hoping they will commit to quitting smoking. Each school chapter is also required to organize an event for it.

Kick Butts Day

Kick Butts Day is an annual event aimed at educating adolescents about the dangers of tobacco. It was started by the Campaign For Smoking Children. This is another day that every school chapter is required to hold an event. The date 2017 is March 15th.

RTLI

RTLI (REBEL Tobacco Learning Institute) is an event held once a year. The goal is to educate select REBEL members. Each county sent some of their members to a three-day retreat last night. They attend classes to learn skills in educating others about the dangers of tobacco. Some classes include informative classes such as Tobacco 101, Tobacco 202, and Tobacco Control at the Border. They also have skills classes such as Communication Training Camp, Leaders with Power, and Group Facilitation. Each region also chose the initiative. Each county must have five regional events related to their initiative, and each school chapter is required to have at least one event related to the district initiative. The four initiatives that can be chosen by the county are:

  • Recruitment , which aims to teach techniques to recruit new members.
  • Advocacy , which teaches members to voice their opinions.
  • Reading and Mentoring , which teaches the skills of regional members to assist with group mentoring programs.
  • Youth Empowerment , which provides members with skills to work without adults doing everything for them.

State Summit

The state summit is held once every year for all members from across the state. This event is to help keep members all over the country stick together. During the morning members get together and share ideas and make new friends. During the afternoon, the members have fun activities. Many events have been held at Six Flags, with members gathered in the morning and then allowed to roam the park for the rest of the day.

This group has 2 books made by Scholastic. The Uninvited Guest , directed to Grade 2 and 3 students, and Get Rid of the Smoke! directed toward kindergartens and grades 1. School chapters may have training to train members to read to younger children. Before the school can be able to bring their members to read to younger children, all participating members must have been trained in mentoring. The mentoring program is also a regional initiative.
