Dukhan is a known body practice ritual in which the body is smoked with special species wood (aromatic). This ritual is mainly done by married women and women preparing for marriage in the northern provinces of Sudan, although men also occasionally do so to treat rheumatic pain. But Dukhan practice is rarely performed among men. In fact, North Sudanese culture dislikes exercise among men. This technique is regarded as a traditional medicine technique in Southern Sudan
The practice of taking dukhan has many health benefits such as smoothing the skin, and narrowing the vagina with women (last useful after giving birth) It also gives the skin a pleasant aroma (because the wood species are used, usually shaff and wood talh.Dukhan is said also useful for treating syphilis , gonorrhea and rheumatic pain. In these circumstances, various medicinal plants (such as tundub, natron) are used instead. Dukhan is often followed by dilka (scented massage).
The ritual goes as follows: a woman is anointed with karkar (perfume) and lasts naked (just covered with shamla - a thick local wool blanket-) on a chair with a hole in the middle. Under this chair, a fire was lit in a hole and a fragrant wood was placed on it, producing smoke. He remained seated until the heat became unbearable.
