Pittway Corporation is a diversified holding company known as a manufacturer and distributor of professional and consumer fire alarms and thieves.
In 1962, Neison Harris became president, having worked as an executive at Gillette, at the time the company was transitioning from a trolley operating company into a diversified company running a lot of businesses. Pittway completed the transport divestiture in 1964 through the sale of a trolley operation to the Allegheny Region Port Authority, receiving over US $ 16 million for operations. The death of a trolley operation may be attributed to an increase in the purchase of private cars.
Neison Harris's brother, Irving B. Harris, also plays an important role in the company. Leo Guthart was formerly Vice Chairman of the company.
Among the company's acquisitions in the 1960s were Barr-Stalfort Co., aerosol tin filler company, Alarm Device Manufacturing Co., and Industrial Publishing Co.
Relocated its headquarters to Chicago in 1967. In 1967, the company was renamed Pittway Corporation.
