Pittway Corporation is a diversified holding company known as a manufacturer and distributor of professional and consumer fire alarms and thieves.

In 1962, Neison Harris became president, having worked as an executive at Gillette, at the time the company was transitioning from a trolley operating company into a diversified company running a lot of businesses. Pittway completed the transport divestiture in 1964 through the sale of a trolley operation to the Allegheny Region Port Authority, receiving over US $ 16 million for operations. The death of a trolley operation may be attributed to an increase in the purchase of private cars.

Neison Harris's brother, Irving B. Harris, also plays an important role in the company. Leo Guthart was formerly Vice Chairman of the company.

Among the company's acquisitions in the 1960s were Barr-Stalfort Co., aerosol tin filler company, Alarm Device Manufacturing Co., and Industrial Publishing Co.

Relocated its headquarters to Chicago in 1967. In 1967, the company was renamed Pittway Corporation. Later, Pittway became famous as the manufacturer and distributor of the first home warning alarm brand, fire alarms and professional thieves, and other security systems, and as a real estate company. It also owned Fire-Lite fire alarm company and Notifier.

In 1968, the company's deputy chairman was C. D. Palmer, who is also a senior executive based in Pittsburgh's home town of Pittsburgh.

In the 1970s, particularly in 1977, Pittway and General Electric were the dominant manufacturers of consumer smoke alarms. At that time, Pittway units were distributed by Sears. In 1978, the Consumer Product Safety Commission assessed a US $ 100,000 penalty against Pittway for selling smoke detectors that were also a fire hazard.

Proposed in December 1999 and completed in February 2000, Honeywell acquired Pittway for US $ 2.2 billion as a game to expand the breadth of their home business and build control units.
