Smokey Bear
In the spring of 1950, a severely burned black bear boy was rescued from a huge forest fire on the Capitan Gap in the Capitan Mountains. First called Hotfoot Teddy, he later renamed Smokey and became a real-life version of the mascot of the US Forest Service Smokey Bear. Smokey was then sent to the National Zoo in Washington D.C., where he lived for 26 years. After his death on November 9, 1976, the remains of Smokey were returned by the government to Capitan and buried in what is now the Smokey Bear Historical Park.

Capitan is the home of rancher and entrepreneur Edward R. Tinsley, III, owner of chain restaurant K-Bob's Steakhouse. He was also a failed Republican candidate in 2008 for the 2nd congressional district seat left by Steve Pearce, who was unsuccessful for the United States Senate.
