An ashtray is a container for ashes from cigarettes and cigars. Ashtray is usually made of refractory materials such as glass, heat-resistant plastic, pottery, metal, or stone.

The most common ashtray design is a shallow cylinder on a flat base, to be placed on a table. Other ashtrays, especially in public places, are mounted on walls, and are larger than standard ashtray tables due to the increased use they receive. Many ashtrays are notch on the lips, to hold a cigarette and/or a cigar. Often an ashtray is fitted in an older big or luxury car before it is then available as an agent-installed accessory. For example, cars like the BMW E38 feature ashtrays and lighters mounted on both rear doors.
The word "ashtray" itself was not used in general until 1926. The need for public ash containers saw a surge in the post-World War II era when cigarettes began to be mass-produced with biodegradable non-filters and popular cigars cheap sale with disposable plastic end.
