" Young, Wild & Free " is American rapper Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa with American singer-songwriter Bruno Mars. The album was released on October 11, 2011 by Atlantic Records as the lead single from the movie soundtrack, Mac & amp; Devin Go to High School . Mars, Philip Lawrence, and Ari Levine from The Smeezingtons produced the song and wrote it with Christopher Brown, Snopp Dogg, and Wiz Khalifa. Because the song is modeled after two other songs ("Toot It & Boot It" and "Sneakin 'in the Back"), the song credit was added for a total of seventeen tracks. Produced by Smeezingtons, his compositions began during Smeezingtons free-style studio sessions; when the progress on the song stalled, Aaron Bay-Shuck regarded it as a potential blow and asked them to finish it. After the song was finished, Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa were added.

"Young, Wild & Free" received mixed criticism from music critics, who praised him for standing in style from the rest of the soundtrack with hip-hop drums and piano hooks. Some critics praised the pop-nostalgic pop group Mars and rap Snoop Dogg, but criticized the performance of rap Wiz Khalifa for being too harsh. It was commercially successful, reaching the top ten in some markets (including number seven on Billboard Hot 100 and number six in France and Switzerland); it peaked at number two in New Zealand and number four in Australia. The single is certified platinum fourfold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), five times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of Australia (ARIA) and one-time platinum by NZ Music Recording (RMNZ).

The accompanying music video, filmed in Montclair, California in October 2011, was directed by Dylan Brown. Video features Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa have fun driving karts, skateboarding and being surrounded by women at a party, punctuated with footage from Mac & amp; Devin Go to High School . "Young, Wild & Free" is shown live several times including on VMA Tour 2012 and in Coachella 2012. It's also part of Boys of Zummer 2015 (American tour on Khalifa tour with Fall Out Boy), Dogg's 2016 Puff Puff Pass Tour Part 2, and two collaborative tours by Dogg and Khalifa: the 2011 High School Tour and the 2016 Summer High Street Tour. The song was nominated for Best Rap Song at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards in 2013, and received the Most Performed Song award at the ASCAP Pop Music Awards 2013.

Background and production

During an interview in American music magazine American Songwriter , Philip Lawrence said that â € Å"Young, Wild & amp; Freeâ € is â € Å"after-thoughtâ € and â € Å"here is much pleasure behind itâ €. The song begins when Smeezingtons is experimenting in the studio, a process that usually begins when they are behind a mic and singing "until something is attached". Although the team thinks "it's just something small" that will never be heard, Aaron Bay-Shuck tells them that the song is "smash" and they have to finish it. Mars then sent the song to Snoop Dogg, who showed it to Wiz Khalifa. They liked the track, decided to record it and return the tape to Mars (which adds the finishing touch).

"Young, Wild & Free" was originally written by Calvin Broadus, Cameron Thomaz, Peter Hernandez, Philip Lawrence, Ari Levine, and Christopher Brown. For taking samples of "Toot It & Boot It" by American rapper Keenon Jackson and singer Tyrone Griffin, they received a write credit with Nye Lee, Marlon Borrow and Marquise Newman (who did additional writing). "Toot It & Boot It" has sampled "Songs in the Wind" by The Association (written by Ted Bluechel) from their 1966 album, Renaissance , so Bluechel is added as a songwriter. "Young, Wild & amp; Free " 's piano opener took samples of "Sneakin' on the back", from the 1974 album Tom Scott and The LA Express , and the song re-registered with ASCAP with additional writing credits for Max Bennett, Larry Carlton, John Guerin, Joe Sample and Tom Scott. The single is produced by Mars, Lawrence and Levine under their stage name, The Smeezingtons, and is engineered by Levine, Andy Drucker and Travis "Shaggy" Marshall at Levcon Studios and Paramount Recording Studios in Los Angeles and DSR in Hollywood. Levine mixes the tracks at Levcon Studios, and Chris Gehringer mastered them at Sterling Sound in New York City.

Lyrical composition and interpretation

"Young, Wild & Free" is a pop-rap three minutes, 27 seconds. It differs from the G-funk style of other songs by Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa on the soundtrack, combining pop elements into the chorus. According to digital sheet music, the song is composed in a major D key with a tempo of 100 beats per minute. Dogg's voice ranges from low B2 to A4 high. The song consists of hip-hop drums lined with cold "sparkling" piano hooks and spinning "agile" and "shake the choir". "The jolly vibrations" made the single "perfect soundtrack for Friday night with friends". Cough sounded, implying party vibration. This song is a weed song, reminiscent of "blurry" and youth: "It's like I'm 17 again/Peach fuzz on my face/Lookin ', in case/Trying to get a taste of hella", while the first in the following verses "The joint scrolls are bigger than the King Kong's fingers/And smoke them hoe until they sting." The Martian pop-soul choir also reminisced: "So what, we're drunk/So what, we smoke marijuana/We just have fun/We do not care who sees/So what, we go out/That's it/Live young and wild and free. "

Acceptance and critical awards

The song received mixed reviews from most of the music critics. For Entertainment Weekly , Kyle Anderson praised the sweet "Mars"; with the " ' summer song ' written on it", it "could be a graduation song for stoners everywhere" if released in May. MTV's Jenna Rubenstein gave the generally positive review song as more of a "brave party hour"; the three singers are not bothered by the judgment of others, and "that is the positive and family-friendly message we take." Billboard gave it three and a half out of five stars, calling it a "nostalgic fog". The review praised the easy flow of Snoop Dogg, but called Whiz Khalifa's "strong" and "punchy" shipping; it's "getting above the rhythm and harshes mellow casual production." In a similar review, Lewis Corner of Digital Spy praised Dogg's verses and called the singles "cool and addictive"; However, he found the song's "taste" short-lived. In a negative review, Shea Serrano of LA Weekly compares the atmosphere of the song with "the inside of a cloud (smoke), a celebration or idea of what some teenagers who smoke marijuana would like." Serrano noted, ironically, that the performers were not young, wild or free.

At AllMusic, David Jeffries writes that "Young, Wild & Free" has a more contemporary and friendly voice in the rest of the album; This single is "polished, bright and sunshine". In another album review, Michael Madden of Consequence of Sound considered him one of the few songs good enough for the soundtrack for "the subtle pop vocals of Bruno Mars and the fancy Hollywood production". The A.V. Club ' s Chris Martins praised the "sharp key and lite Jackson 5" single compared to other G-Funk songs on the soundtrack. The song was nominated for Best Rap Song at the Grammy Awards 2013 and received the Most Performed Song award at the ASCAP Pop Music Awards 2013. According to the Billboard list that measures "the energy of inebriated songs on a scale of one to 10 ( really stoned) "," Young, Wild & Free "received seven; according to Billboard staff, it can be appreciated by "serious stoners" and others because of its playful nature.
