Plastic-tipped bullet is a type of bullet designed to bring spitzer aerodynamics to hollow bullets. Most tips are made from polyoxymethylene, although some manufacturers have used polyethylene urethane-methylenebis copolymers (phenylisocyanate).

Description
The bullet consists of a fairly normal hollow-point bullet with a frontal cavity filled with hard plastic, which is formed into a sleek shape that mimics the shape of a spitzer bullet. After the collision, the plastic movers enter the hollow point, or fragments into small pieces and bullets performing like ordinary hollow points, extending ("mushroom") to larger or fragmented diameters. The end result is a bullet with the bending characteristics of the spitzer bullet and a mushroomed terminal increase from the jacketed Hollow-Point (JHPs). These bullets have aerodynamics for longer flight, more accurate, and performance in target to ensure high mortality rate.

Usage
Traditionally, these cartridges are intended for use in disposable rifles and pistols, since pistols are usually not used at long distances where the slimistic ballistic tip is advantageous. However, some companies produce handgun ammunition with plastic hollow points where the plastic is formed into a more rounded end. This design was not created to improve downsizing of bullets but to improve feeding ammunition in semi-automatic pistols that are susceptible to congestion with ordinary hollow point ammunition. Examples of such pistol ammunition include the "Glaser Pow'RBall" line of Cor-Bon/Glaser and the "NyTrilium Air Freedom" ammunition Extreme Shock (the "NyTrilium Air Freedom" cartridge also mimics the performance of the Glaser Safety Slug cartridge, as it uses a hollow bullet full of powder metal designed to break quickly when reaching the target).
Name
"Ballistic Tip" is a registered trademark of Nosler, but many other companies produce similar projectiles, including Hornady and Sierra. Nosler uses color codes to show caliber at the end of a polymer bullet, to make it easy to distinguish from one another:.224 orange,.257-blue, 6mm-purple, 6.5mm-tan,.270-yellow, 7mm-red,.30- green,.338-maroon and 8mm-dark blue. Hornady almost universally uses red plastic tips. Exceptions to this include the Horn4.2224 "manufactured project with blue plastic ends for use in civilian loads of exclusive 5.7x28mm FNH's cartridges and variations of" Z-Max "or" Zombie Max "from their V-Max ammo, using green plastic. (and has no other changes than the V-Max in addition to packaging.) Sierra uses green, Barnes uses blue for their "TTSX" bullets, and Swift uses black tips for their Scirocco "plastic" cartridges.
