Work
In June 2002, Baas graduated from the Design Academy with a series of burning furniture called "Smoke." The Smoke series was adopted in the collection of the Dutch label Moooi. Thanks to successful presentations in Milan, London and Paris, Smoke is known worldwide. The smoke furniture has been purchased by museums and collectors such as Lidewij Edelkoort and Philippe Starck.
In May 2004, a highly discussed solo exhibition opened with New York gallery Murray Moss. "Where There Smoke" shows 25 pieces of furniture, all burned and finished with transparent epoxy. Among other pieces, there are classic design versions like Gaudi, Eames, Rietveld, Sottsass and Campana Brothers.
After the great success of Smoke, Baas presented his Clay Furniture collection in 2006. Unlike the most rigid and rational style of most designs at the time, Clay's furniture showed a delightful and fragile collection of brightly colored pieces of furniture. The series is made of synthetic clay with metal carcass interior. Clay is widely regarded as a viable Smoke successor. In 2012, Smoke and Clay are considered the "classic future designs" by the New York Times.
Every year at Salone del Mobile in Milan, Baas has made a successful solo presentation of his new work, independent of the brand or gallery. In 2009, he launched "Real Time": a series of 12 hour films, where the actors show minute by minute. The Real Time series also shows the theatrical approach of Baas. Real Time leads to the prestigious title "Designer of the Year" by Miami Design.
In 2013, Maarten Baas produces grandma and grandpa's hours. The two pieces are displayed at Miami Design 2013. "Expanding on the idea of ââgrandfather clocks, he creates his own version and hers with live characters inside the beautiful tower faces." Filming two actors in real time with digital equipment, Bass filmed them carefully write a number by hand with a black marker that shows all 24 hours of the day and erase the image as minutes pass under the blurry glass face. " After 5 years absence at the design show in Milan, Baas returns in 2014 with an exhibition called "Baas is in Town," inspired by the circus and entertainment. The exhibition won the "best impact award" from the Milano Design Awards. In 2015 Baas, made a design for residential buildings in the Netherlands, in collaboration with architects van Aaken.
