Histori

Grandy's was founded in 1972 by Walter E. Johnson and Rex E. Sanders, who became friends while working together as a teenager in the Dallas, Texas cafeteria. After launching and selling a successful restaurant chain, the two youths created Grandy's, hoping to combine fast-food efficiency with a full-service restaurant atmosphere.

Under the ownership of Saga Foods, Inc. a multi-concept restaurant company that acquired Grandy's in 1983, Grandy's experienced its largest growth spurt, especially in the 1980s, having at its peak nearly 200 stores. Saga purchases by Marriott Corporation led to sales from the Grandy network, along with another concept owned by Saga, to the American Restaurant Group. In the late 1990s, Grandy, now more than 20 years old, began closing old and poorly performing remote markets. They retreated to the core markets of Texas and Oklahoma with a strong presence in southern Indiana and northern Kentucky.

In 2000, American Restaurant Group sold Grandy's and three other subsidiaries to Spectrum Restaurant Group. Spectra filed for bankruptcy in 2006 and put Grandy for sale. Souper Salad acquired Grandy's in 2007. Souper Salad filed for bankruptcy in 2011 and sold Grandy's to Captain D's.

In July 2004, Steve Butts and Brian Bowen left Grandy's, leaving the restaurant chain without an executive to lead the chain. It started the loss of sales and the number of units.

Monty Whitehurst took over, with no experience running a chain restaurant. In 12 months, the chain lost 18 stores and the same store sales fell 32%. Also under Whitehurst are many Grandy locations exposed to local television stations due to failed health checks. This causes sales to decrease.

During the G8 meeting of 2004, held at Sea Island, Georgia, Brunswick, Georgia store had an exclusive contract to provide food for the Secret Service, BATF, Patrol State of Georgia, and other law enforcement agencies that protected the leaders. Then-US president George W. Bush visited the command center and personally thanked all the catering staff for their work.

Starting January 2016, Grandy's franchises in seven states, with 47 restaurants. Half of these locations are in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
