Final Cut Pro X (pronounced "Final Cut Pro Ten") is a professional non-linear video editing app published by Apple Inc. as part of the Pro Apps family of software programs. The album was released on June 21, 2011 for sale on the Mac App Store. It is a controversial successor to Final Cut Pro and both editors are incompatible and have different approaches for editing.

Features

Final Cut Pro X shares some code and interface design philosophy with Apple's consumer video editing software, iMovie.

Interface

  • Browser Events : Replacing "trash" in other NLEs, the Event Browser is where the original media is found and searchable and sorted in various forms of metadata. Keyword Range, Favorite Range and Rejected, and Smart Collection allow quicker sorting of a large number of clips.
  • Magnetic Timeline : Creates alternatives to track based timelines found in traditional NLE, Timeline Magnetic End Cut uses Clip Connection to keep Connected Clips and Secondary Story Flow synchronized with clips that are in the Primary Storyline. By default the clips move around each other "magnets" filling the gap and avoiding Clip Collisions by crashing the clips automatically from the vertical path. Magnetic connections can also be determined by the user.
  • Roles : To separate and set different audio types on the magnetic timeline, the editor can assign what "roles" each clip plays. Introduced in version 10.0.1, Roles can be set for clips as an alternative way to create organizational functionality. Roles (or Sub-Roles) are assigned to a clip to identify what it is (for example: Video, Title, Dialog, Effect, Music). After the Master File Sharing Project various Roles can be shared as trunks or in multitrack files for broadcast delivery or other distribution needs.
  • Content Autocompletion : Found in Event Importer and Browser Window is an option to analyze media for image shoot and facial recognition or fix potential issues such as loudness audio, audio buzz, channel groupings, background noise , color balance, pulldown removal, and stabilization. This process generates metadata that can automatically be set as Keywords and can be grouped into the Smart Collection.
  • Synced Clips : Video and audio clips recorded on separate devices can be synchronized automatically by timecode, audio waveform, and bookmark together as a single clip.
  • Combined Clip : The Nested Sequence of the original Final Cut Pro has been replaced by the Combined Clip. The selection of video and audio clips can be incorporated into one Combined Clip. This Clip Compound can be opened in its own timeline or broken apart for further editing. It can also be reused in different Projects.
  • Closed Captions : Introduced in version 10.4.1, closed captions can be created right on the timeline or imported into the timeline of external files.
  • Multicam Editing : Introduced in version 10.0.3, some camera angles can be synchronized automatically and merged into Multicam Clips. Once in the timeline, Multicam Clip can be cut into different angles using the Angle Viewer. Multicam clips can be opened in the Angle Editor where new corners can be added, synced, relabeled, and rearranged at any time.
  • Auditions : Clips can be grouped together in an Event Browser or in Timeline as Auditions. Once in the timeline, Audition allows the user to choose between different clips in editing while the timeline ripens automatically to see two or more different versions of a cut.
  • 3D Title : Introduced in version 10.2.0, text can be extruded, textured, lit and shaded with materials and environment in 3D. It allows users to create titles like those found in Hollywood blockbuster movies directly in the app.
  • 360 Degrees Video Editing : Introduced in version 10.4. Import and edit 360 Â ° eftectangular videos in various formats and frame sizes.
  • Advanced Color
  • High Dynamic Reach

Technical features

When inheriting the name of its predecessor, Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Pro X is a completely rewritten app. As a native 64-bit app, it utilizes more than 4GB of RAM. It uses all CPU cores with Grand Central Dispatch. Open CL support enables GPU accelerated processing to improve performance for playback, rendering, and transcoding. This is an independent resolution, supporting the image size from SD to beyond 4K. Final Cut Pro X supports playback of many original camera and audio formats. It can also transcode video clips to the Apple ProRes codec to improve performance. Many tasks are done in the background such as automated storage, rendering, transcoding, and media management, allowing users uninterrupted experience. Final Cut Pro X is developed for macOS and is not supported on the Windows Platform. Training and Certification is available by Apple for Final Cut Pro X.

Development

Final Cut Pro X was made available for purchase and download on the Mac App Store on June 21, 2011 along with a new version of Motion and Compressor. Since then this app has been updated several times each year with new features, bug fixes, native codec support, and comprehensive improvements with stability.

Many of the features found in Final Cut Pro 7 that are missing in Final Cut Pro X in the initial release have been added such as: XML import and export, server support, multicam editing, chapter markers and broadcast monitor support.

Since Final Cut Pro X leaves a song-based timeline that supports the Magnet Timeline there was initially a limit in exporting the audio rod for Broadcast and Distribution purposes. On September 9, 2011 version 10.0.1 was released with new solutions to this problem, the introduction of Video and Audio Roles. Clip assigned Roles and after Project Sharing a user can export File or Quick Trunk Multitrack. AAF export is done with X2Pro third-party apps that use FCPXML. Another method is to use Logic Pro X to create AAF.

With version 10.0.6 released on October 23, 2012, Apple introduced original Redcode Raw support as well as MXF support through third-party plugins. MXF is finally supported natively by version 10.1.4.

Before the introduction of version 10.1.0 Project and Event Libraries are separate folders. The event contains all the original media and Project Library contains the actual Project edited on the timeline. The Project Library and Events are stored in the user's Movie folder or at the root level of the external hard drive. This library is automatically opened in Final Cut Pro X depending on the hard drive installed. It all changes on December 19, 2013 when the Project and Event Library are merged into the new Library model. The Library contains Events which in turn contain the Project. And unlike before, the Library can be opened and closed by the user. Media can be stored internally in the Library or stored outside the Library. On June 27, 2014, media management was further refined with the release of version 10.1.2.

During the NAB Show 2015, Apple released version 10.2.0. 3D titles are introduced directly in Final Cut Pro X and its companion application, Motion. The Color Board joins the new Color Correction effect to allow for more flexibility in stacking layers of effects. The ability to apply Keying Masks or Direct Shapes to any effect is also introduced.

Version 10.3 introduces an entirely new interface and enhanced magnetic timeline. Support for iXML metadata when importing audio. Audio editing is much better. The audio role can be displayed in the path. Import, edit, and export colors REC 2020. MXF support.

Version 10.4.0 introduces color wheel and color curve, video editing 360º and High Dynamic Range (HDR) video,

During the NAB Show 2018 Apple released version 10.4.1. Closed Captioning was introduced as well as support for RAW ProRes. Version 10.4.1 requires Mac OS version 10.13.2 Sierra High.

Reception

Final Cut Pro X was announced in April 2011 simultaneously at the Los Angeles Cut-End End User Group held at Bally's Las Vegas and at the NAB Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center and released in June 2011.

His reactions are very diverse, with veteran filmmaker Walter Murch initially saying, "I can not use this," citing a lack of features compared to Final Cut Pro 7. In a 2015 interview, Murch was much less critical of the tool and suggested that he was interested in using it.

The loss of features and issues noted as important for professional video production in FCPX include lack of editing decision lists (EDL), XML and Open Media Framework Interchange (OMF) support, inability to import projects created in previous releases of Final Cut Pro, lack of tools multicam editing, third-party I/O hardware output, and video recording is limited to Firewire video devices only, including third party hardware retrieval, handled in the first six months of the product's life. EDL exports, a product from the early days of video editing, are now supported through third-party software and created AAF (newer OMF version) to continue the project to ProTools via X2Pro.

Since then, in some people's opinions, some of the initial shortcomings of Final Cut Pro X have been fixed.

Apple announced in April 2018 that there are more than 2.5 million users of Final Cut Pro X..

Ecosystem

Since its release, FCP X has supported the development of the Effect, Title, Transition, and Title plugins by publishing a tailor made effect from Apple Motion. This has led to third-party ecosystem developers building the effect of simple color correction to complex templates. Third party plug-ins can also be created through the Apple FxPlug SDK. Because Projects, Events, and Libraries are stored in a database format, it allows many third-party developers to create workflow tools using FCPXML.
