Ski Cape Smokey is a ski hill located on the Cape Breton Highlands in Nova Scotia. Ski Cape Smokey offers 16 alpine runs, 2 lifts, uphill maintenance and snowmaking. Facilities include cottage at base and mountaintop. The basic inn has a restaurant, bar, ski school, and office hills.
Ski Cape Smokey is known as the highest elevation of Nova Scotia ski mountain in more than 320 m, it can ski 305, and the ocean view. The mountain receives an average of 381 cm of snow each year. But the weather is often unpredictable and above freezing.
Since 2002, ski resorts have sustained financial problems. This problem continues and affects the operation of the area. It suffers from a low population base in the local area and the remoteness of the main population areas. Sydney is 90 minutes and Halifax is 4.5 hours away. In 2006, the ski hill was closed. Years later, volunteers from the Ski Cape Smokey Society, a non-profit caregiver group, attempted to reopen the resort. After several unsuccessful attempts, Ski Cape Smokey finally opened in February 2011, with a very limited mountain section for local skiers using a lower poma mountain lift. Without the snow it can not operate during the lucrative Christmas/New Year holidays.
The facilities in the hill area need a lot of repair and deteriorate very quickly. Quad seats that have not been run or inspected in years may require major repairs at high cost. The same is true in the waivers of snowmaking systems that may not work and must be replaced.
Many prospective buyers have done the due diligence and checked the hill, but no one is willing to make a commitment to the long-term operation of the ski center. The search for a permanent solution continues. The permanent closure of ski hills and asset sales is likely in the future.
