Etymology
The name "Philly roll" comes from the Philadelphia Cream Cheese brand. Including smallpox and cream cheese in sushi rolls takes a combination of these popular ingredients from its use in bagels when sushi is becoming more popular in North America from the 1980s.

Nutritional information
Variations on traditional rolls such as the Philly roll have been criticized for taking a low-fat traditional meal in its iteration in Japan (where salmon will be raw and cheese cream is non-existent) and make it a high-fat one. Traditional rolls do not contain dairy products.
