Mountain Lake is a freshwater lake located in Giles County near Newport, Virginia in the United States. Together with Lake Drummond in Great Dismal Swamp, this is one of only two natural lakes in Virginia. Originally known as Salt Pond, because that's where cattle are given salt.

Lake volcanoes typically cover about 50 acres (200,000 m 2 ), and the levels are mostly constant at 3,875 feet (1,181 m) during the 19th and 20th centuries. Since 2002 it has decreased the dry season by as much as 15 feet (4.6 m). Such last level fluctuations occurred between 1751 and 1804 because the historical record gives many different sizes of lakes.

Natural lakes are generally good in the north, where the Appalachian Range is subjected to recent geological geological activity. But the base on which this lake - the only natural one in southern Appalachian - there has been a source of much speculation. Recent scientific studies show that a combination of unusual natural processes creates lakes, which are managed by a gap at the bottom that provides a way out for sediment and water and prevents the lake from just going into a swamp. The replenishment of lost water depends on the level of rain, and the washing of the sediment from the bottom of the cracked bedrock causes an unstable lake level.
The lake is estimated to be about 6,000 years old, and geologists believe it must have been formed by rock avalanches and dams. The bottom cold springs feed the lake and rarely allow temperatures to rise above 70Ã, Â ° F (21Ã, Â ° C) on the surface and 46Ã, Â ° F (8Ã, Â ° C) 50 feet (15 m) below surface. Because channels and openings are narrow at the bottom of the lake, this level has historically changed dramatically depending on the flow of water through these channels. It's over 100 feet (30 m) when full. Close to the lake is one of Virginia's few virgin forests, including the rare evergreen pine swamps - Mann's Bog - with an unusual northern sequence of remote species. The lake flows into Little Stoney Creek, which passes through a spectacular waterfall known as The Cascades before reaching the New River.
During a severe cold wave in January 1985, Mountain Lake set a record low throughout the state of Virginia: -30 Â ° F (-34 Â ° C).

Mountain Lake Hotel Edit
Salt Pond has been frequented throughout the early part of the 19th century and earlier, then in March 1856, Henley Chapman incorporated Mountain Lake Co. to provide accommodation and entertainment for its visitors. Soon after, a wooden hotel and sawmill were built. Stagecoach travelers from Christiansburg, Virginia, and Union, West Virginia were major customers in the days before Virginia and the Tennessee Railroad (predecessor Norfolk and Western Railway) were built nearby in the late 1850s.
After the Battle of Mount Cloyd in 1864, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), General Union George Crook brought his troops into the city of Union, WV, through Salt Pond Mountain today. Then, in 1869, after the Civil War, the hotel and its properties were sold to General and Mrs. Herman Haupt. Haupt became head of the United States Military Railway during the War. During the first year of their ownership, although not publicly operating, Haupts received compensation from some of their guests for the accommodation provided, prompting Giles County to require them to purchase a hotel license. Furthermore, they decided to reopen the hotel to the general public. Due to the popularity generated from the hotel in this first season, some additional hotels are required to meet the increasing demand for more accommodation.
During the main travel days by train, the resort guests exit the train in Pembroke or Eggleston and are greeted by a horse carriage, which transports them to the Doe Creek Road grounds to the resort. The current main asphalted route on the Mountain, SR 700, was built later, via a different route from the old dirt road.
Giles County's lawyer, Gordon Porterfield, run the property for a while before handing it to his son Gilbert Porterfield, who runs the resort for 25 years. During the reign of Gilbert Porterfield managing the resort, the current reputation for delicious cuisine was established. Also during this time, individuals are allowed to build their own cottage. They received the lease 15 years, after the ownership back to the hotel. During their individual ownership, these guests also receive discounted meals and their housekeeping service. Today, most of the original cottage names established by original owners/builders over 100 years ago are still in use.
In the 1930s, William Lewis Moody, Jr. from Galveston, Texas bought the hotel. In 1938, Moody replaced the wooden hotel with its current structure, built using the original stone to the surrounding land. Princess Moody, Mrs. Mary Moody Northen, owned the hotel until her death in 1986, after which the guardian of her land established a foundation known as Mary Moody Northen Endowment, which currently maintains and operates the resort. This foundation is specifically established in accordance with the last wishes of Ny. Northen to defend the hotel and surrounding land as he always knew, without building and, especially, without altering the resort significantly or disturbing the fine ecology of the beautiful surrounding land. For much of its life as a resort, Mountain Lake Hotel opens from late spring until early autumn, however, shortly after the formation of trust, the resort begins to operate throughout the year. Currently, open from early May to late November and operated by 1859 Historic Hotels Inc., a hotel management company controlled by Moody Foundation, an entity separate from Mary Moody Northen Endowment.
In recent years, the lake level has been reduced due to prolonged drought in southwestern Virginia and the geology that forms the bottom of the lake. In October 2008, the lake receded to the status of the pond. During this time, the remains of Samuel Ira Felder were found at the bottom of the lake. He drowned in July 1921 when he fell into the ocean while canoeing with his friends.
Filming Dirty Dancing Edit
Mountain Lake Hotel is the site for many locations filming the 1987 hit Dirty Dancing movie starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray. The Stone Lodge stands for "Kellerman's Resort", a fictional mountain retreat in the Catskill Mountains in northern New York. Like Kellerman's, the actual Mountain Lake Hotel Resort also offers many indoor and outdoor activities for guests such as games such as table tennis and billiards, water activities such as rowing boats, canoes and fishing, and dry activities such as mountain biking and hiking.
Another site is the 1927 Lake Lure Inn located in Lake Lure, North Carolina.
Mountain Lake Biological Station Edit
In addition to the Mountain Lake Hotel resort complex, Mountain Lake Biological Station (MLBS), a field research and teaching station of the Department of Biology at the University of Virginia established in 1930 is located nearby. The research station is active throughout the year and accommodates researchers from all over the country as well as internationally. Mountain Lake Biological Station is a full-service residential field station located atop Salt Pond Mountain in Appalachian south of southwestern Virginia. Courses include summer field courses, summer internships for students, faculty-driven research projects, scientific meetings, outreach activities, and more. The station is also home to the annual Silene Census that occurred in late May/early June and surveyed the plants in the genus Silene along the roadside around the station (see Psilons), a project that has been going on since 1988. MLBS is the summer home of the Author American Edna Henry Lee Turpin (1867-1952).
Mountain Lake Conservancy Edit
The Mountain Lake Conservancy (formerly known as 'Wilderness Conservancy at Mountain Lake') is a non-profit organization established to help manage and protect 2,800 acres of Mountain Lake properties around Mountain Lake Hotel, and to provide environmental and cultural education to the public. Since 2008, The Nature Conservancy has started to manage and develop leisure opportunities for hotel and local guests in accordance with its mission, vision and core values.
