History

Widely recognized by many as the first popular filter cigarette, Kent was introduced by Lorillard Tobacco Company in 1952 around the same time a series of articles titled "cancer by carton", published by Reader's Digest, fearing American Consumers brand filters at the moment most of the brands are unfiltered. (Viceroy's cigarette was the first to introduce the filter, in 1936.) Kent widely praised his famous "micronit filter" and promised consumers the "greatest health protection in history." Kent's sales skyrocketed, and it has been estimated that in Kent's first four years on the market, Lorillard sells about 13 billion Kent cigarettes. From March 1952 until at least May 1956, however, Micronite filters in Kent cigarettes contain compressed carcinogenic blue asbestos in creped crepe paper. It has been suspected that many cases of mesothelioma have been caused specifically by smoking native Kent cigarettes, and various lawsuits that followed for many years therefore. Lorillard secretly changed the filter material from asbestos to the more common cellulose acetate in mid-1956. Kent continued to grow until the late 1960s, then began a long, steady decline as more screened cigarette brands promised lower tar (and attracted smokers for "safer" smoke is introduced.

However, Kent remained on the list of ten brands of cigarettes until 1979. In 1977, Lorillard sold Kent's foreign rights and all other brands and now Kents produced outside the US belonged to British American Tobacco.

In the 1970s, British American Tobacco bought the brand and started selling it outside the US, eventually making it one of their most popular brands with Dunhill, Lucky Strike, Pall Mall, and Rothmans.

On June 15, 2014, Reynolds American offered to buy the $ 27.4 billion Lorillard tobacco company and effective June 12, 2015, the Kent brand belonged to R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.

Various advertising posters were made for Kent cigarettes, from 1955 to 1986.

Kent in Romania

Between 1970 and 1990, Kent was the most requested cigarette in Romania and in some parts of the domestic market used as a payment or a bribe. At the end of the interval, Kent is no longer available in regular retail, which is officially sold only in hard currency stores. Clearly, the black market was developing at the time, as most Kents were smuggled by relatively few Romanians allowed to travel abroad (sea and air crew, diplomatic staff, etc.)
