On January 9, 2017, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health issued a death certificate stating "heart attack/suspended" as the cause of death. More tests are expected. In June 16, 2017, press release, the Los Angeles County coroner's office said that the exact cause of death can not be determined, but sleep apnea and the buildup of fat tissue in the arterial wall is one of the contributing factors. The full report of June 19, 2017, states that Fisher has cocaine in his system, as well as traces of heroin, other opiates, and MDMA. The report also stated that the investigation could not determine when he had taken drugs, and whether they contributed to his death. His daughter, Billie Lourd, stated that Fisher "fought against addiction to drugs and mental illness throughout his life [and] eventually died from it." He is deliberately exposed in all his work on the social stigma surrounding these diseases... I know my Mother, wants his death to encourage people to be open about their cause. "

The day after Fisher's death, his mother Debbie Reynolds suffered a stroke at Todd's son's home, where his family planned a fisher funeral arrangement. She was taken to the hospital, where she died that afternoon that afternoon. According to Todd Fisher, Reynolds said, "I want to be with Carrie" immediately before suffering a stroke. Some obituaries and retrospective displays the quote. In the absence of a star for Fisher on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, fans create their own warnings using blank stars. Along with flowers and candles, the words placed on the blank star read, "Carrie Fisher might be always with you".
