The Burren Smokehouse is an Irish family-run fishmonger.

History

The company was founded in 1989, at Kincora Road, Lisdoonvarna, County Clare, by Peter and Birgitta Curtin. Smokehouse starts with smoking and curing salmon and then branched into mackerel, trout and eel. Cheese also added. According to Good Food Ireland, this is "a well-known, award-winning traditional smoke house" .

The company also runs a visitor center, which makes it one of the larger tourist attractions in County Clare, and this is one of the organizers and participants of the annual Burren Slow Food Festival.

Awards

Smokehouse has won many awards and certifications for its products. Among others, they have won:

  • Best Organic Retail Product Award category at National Organic Awards 2010
  • Great Taste Awards 2010 (three gold medals of two stars with only four entries among a total of more than 6000)
  • Seafood Exporting Award

The Burren Smokehouse was one of the suppliers of the State Banquet during Elizabeth II's visit to Ireland.

Product reminder

In March 2011, the Smokehouse had to recall a number of smoked salmon, due to low levels of Listeria monocytogenes. Recall is a precautionary measure.
